“Curators, artists, art professionals and supporters from all across the country and around the world are converging to celebrate in Cincinnati. It’s a proud moment for us to help nurture a growing art scene here and to be part of the international conversation about contemporary photography and film.”—Executive Director Mary Ellen Goeke, FotoFocus Biennial 2014

Named one of Fortune’s most up-and-coming urban neighborhoods in July 2014, Over-the-Rhine (OTR) is one of the country’s oldest and most historic neighborhoods, home to 943 buildings of 19th-century Italianate architecture, many of which are now art galleries, shops, restaurants and night-life locations for music and live entertainment. The entire 360-acre OTR neighborhood is located between the Cincinnati’s Downtown, the central business district, and the Uptown arts, medical, university communities of Clifton and Mt. Auburn. OTR is easy to access and holds the newly re-designed (2012) Washington Park, situated in the heart of the OTR commuity, it is an now eight-acre urban oasis all the more appealing as art hub to FotoFocus.

The renovation was designed by architect Deborah Berke, following federal standards for historic rehabilitation. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic places and many of its original features were preserved, including a sweeping staircase leading to the second floor ballroom and the original mosaic tile floors in the restaurant and elevator lobby. While respecting and preserving the character of this once grand hotel, 21c has created a new space to showcase the work of contemporary artists.
